FAQ
Which Omeprazole strengths and pack sizes can I order?
Omeprazole tablets come as 10mg, 20mg and 40mg. You can order packs of 30 to 360 tablets. Larger packs cost less per tablet.
How does Omeprazole delivery to Hong Kong work?
Omeprazole orders can be sent by standard airmail, which takes 14 to 21 business days, or 30 at most, and is untracked. Every parcel arrives in plain, unbranded packaging with nothing outside about the contents. Very large orders over 120 units may be split into several parcels.
What are the other names for omeprazole?
Brand names for omeprazole include Prilosec, Lomac, Losec, Ocid and Omez. Omeprazole tablets are a pure generic omeprazole product and are not any of those brands. Here, omeprazole can also be bought online as generic Prilosec.
How long does omeprazole take to work?
Not straight away. Steady acid control builds over one to four days of daily tablets, and an ulcer or reflux damage can take a few weeks to heal. For heartburn that is already burning, an antacid brings quicker relief than omeprazole can.
Should omeprazole be taken before or after food?
Before a meal works better: the tablet should be in place as your stomach starts making acid, and breakfast suits most people because it is the meal least likely to be skipped. If you only remember after eating, take it then and go back to your usual time the next day.
Can I drink alcohol with omeprazole?
There is no known reaction between omeprazole and alcohol, so a drink now and then is not off the table. Alcohol relaxes the valve at the top of the stomach and adds its own acid, though, so a heavy night can bring heartburn back even while the tablets are working.
Does omeprazole affect other medicines?
Yes. It changes how the liver clears clopidogrel, warfarin and methotrexate, and by cutting stomach acid it leaves antifungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole less able to dissolve and be absorbed. The clopidogrel point matters most, since the two are often taken together after heart treatment.
How long can I take omeprazole for?
Ulcers and reflux damage usually settle after a few weeks of daily tablets. Longer daily use is kept for people whose symptoms return quickly, or who have Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where acid production stays very high. Occasional heartburn is a different pattern and rarely needs a long course.
About Omeprazole
What omeprazole is for
Omeprazole turns down the amount of acid your stomach produces. It is a proton pump inhibitor, which means it switches off the small acid pumps in the stomach lining, so less acid flows back up the food pipe and sore patches there have room to heal.
That covers the everyday problem — heartburn and acid reflux that keeps returning — along with reflux oesophagitis (damage to the food pipe from acid), stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers (sores in the first stretch of the small intestine). Omeprazole is also part of Helicobacter pylori treatment, taken with antibiotics to clear the bacterium behind many ulcers, and it is used in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, where the stomach makes far too much acid.
Taking omeprazole
One tablet a day suits most people, swallowed whole with water. The delayed-release coating carries the medicine past the stomach acid and releases it further down, so splitting, chewing or crushing a tablet spoils that. Morning is the usual slot, before a meal — breakfast, for most people. Keep to roughly the same time daily.
Do not expect relief within minutes. Omeprazole needs a day or two, sometimes up to four, before you feel the full benefit; it is not the tablet to reach for in the middle of a heartburn attack.
Side effects to expect
Headache, stomach pain, wind, diarrhoea, nausea and constipation are the common ones, and they often ease as your body adjusts. Swelling of the face, lips or throat, or a rash with difficulty breathing, needs urgent help.
Long courses are linked with low magnesium — muscle cramps, a fluttering heartbeat — and with low vitamin B12. Diarrhoea that will not stop is sometimes an infection rather than a side effect.
Mixing with other medicines
Omeprazole is broken down in the liver and can change how quickly other medicines clear from the body. The ones that matter most are clopidogrel (used to prevent blood clots), warfarin, methotrexate and antifungals such as itraconazole and ketoconazole.
Omeprazole or Prilosec?
Prilosec carries the same active ingredient in the same 10mg, 20mg and 40mg tablets; the difference is the brand name. Take your pick, then choose the strength and pack size you want.
